RAJASTHAN

March 2024

Rajasthan

These photographs were taken on recent trip to Rajasthan. They offer a glimpse into the unique culture of the Rajasthani people the and lifestyle of the Kalbelia, Raika, and Marwari tribes, otherwise known as migrating gypsies. Residing in the desert outskirts of Pushkar, Ajmer, Chittorgarh, and Udaipur, these nomadic communities earn their livelihood through music, art, snake charming, camel herding, and tourism.

Despite their rich heritage and skills, these tribes occupy the lowest rung of India's caste system, living outside mainstream society. Prime Minister Narendra Modi's plan to dismantle the caste system to promote equality and opportunity for all Indians is a significant and historic move. While it aims for greater social justice, it could profoundly impact the tribes' traditional way of life and cultural heritage.

The transition to a more egalitarian society may offer new opportunities, but also threatens the preservation of the tribes' unique traditions and skills. These traditions play an integral part of Indian culture, channelling enchanting and artistic heritage into everyday life.

It is important to share the stories of these marginalised communities, highlighting their resilience, creativity, and cultural richness. Through raising awareness of the challenges they face, we can contribute to a deeper understanding of Rajasthan's diverse cultural heritage and the ongoing struggle for social justice in India.
